Scottish Gaelic Phonics (Fridays)

Service Description

This is a short course designed to improve your Gaelic pronunciation as well as enabling effective reading and writing as you progress on your Gaelic Learning Journey. This course does not teach Gaelic itself as a language - those with no Gaelic at all (as yet!) will benefit as much as those with some writing and reading competencies. Each 45 minute class will consist of: 1. A little background Learning, including: Language in Context - what makes Gaelic 'different' The Gaelic Alphabet Standardisation of Spelling (GOC,2009) Gràbh Accents, Hiatus & Helper Vowels The B2B & S2S Rule and its multiple functions Multiple Dialects+ Range, Precision and 'Wiggle-Room' Online Dictionary Use & Audio Support Tools and Resources 2. Practice – Pronunciation and Forms (one area of focus each week) Broad Consonant Forms & Broad Digraphs (lenition) Broad Blends Broad Disyllables Blends in Broad Disyllables Slender Consonant Forms & Slender Digraphs (slenderisation) Slender Blends Slender Disyllables Blends in Slender Disyllables 3. Context (Activities and Learning) Rhyming Words – for memory and pattern-recognition Gnàthasan-cainnte - Traditional Gaelic Sayings to develop verbal dexterity Dictation, Dictionary Use & Other Skills – For Independent Learning Speaking Practice homework to send to your tutor Audio Files of all sounds and words will be provided for each class, including the traditional sayings.
