Service Description

This Course Begins on Monday August 5th 2024, at 7pm BST (90 minutes duration per class) via Zoom, for 8 weeks to 23rd September, 2024. Our Zoom classes will help you to learn to read, write, speak and listen to Scottish Gaelic with confidence, or to return to using Gaelic if your skills are rusty. We assume no prior knowledge of the language at the outset. Classes will have no more than 16 learners per group, ensuring that your experience is enriched through personalised tutor engagement. You will receive a zoom link and joining instructions via email once you have booked your place and payment has been confirmed. During Scottish Gaelic for Absolute Beginners 1, we will take you through Gaelic phonics for effective pronunciation; basic language structure and parts of speech in the present tense; and, a number of useful topics to allow you to ask and answer simple questions through Gaelic as part of everyday conversation. This is the first of a suite of 4 Gaelic Beginners short courses which will give you the skills to use your Gaelic skills in supportive settings. These run over the course of a year. ~ Recorded versions of the lessons will be available to help you to review your learning and to let you catch up with any missed classes. ~ Worksheets, app-based grammar revision games, listening exercises and self-assessment quizzes will help you to build on your learning between classes. Course Descriptor: Each 90 minute weekly class starts with phonics practise to aid your speaking and listening skills before moving onto the main learning which is structured around a key language step (see below). Paradigms are introduced with supporting examples across the skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking, then the focus moves to deepening your understanding through language practice using everyday phrasing within interesting and relevant cultural contexts. This course focuses on the present tense and serves as the foundation for later learning in Beginner Courses 2 to 4, spanning the year ahead. Once you have completed this first course, you will be able to use simple and straightforward Gaelic effectively to have short conversations about your everyday life.
